UANL Researcher Honored with Women in Science Award

María Cristina Rodríguez, a professor at the UANL School of Biological Sciences, received an award from the Mexican Academy of Sciences, UNESCO, and the L'Oréal Mexico Foundation.

Due to the significance of her research on the relationship between the immune system, cancer, and viruses, Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León (UANL) professor María Cristina Rodríguez Padilla was awarded the L’Oréal-UNESCO-AMC Award for Women in Science for its 2024 edition.

Throughout her career of over 40 years in teaching and research, the academic has published numerous high-impact scientific articles, earning her the award organized by the Mexican Academy of Sciences (AMC), with support from UNESCO and sponsorship from the L’Oréal Mexico Foundation.

The award ceremony was held at the Centro Cultural Helénico in Mexico City. While accepting the award, the research professor expressed that this recognition would enable her to complete several of her projects and continue generating knowledge for the benefit of humanity.

She added that the distinction recognizes her dedication to the development of science, particularly highlighting the work done in the Laboratory of Immunology and Virology at the Faculty of Biological Sciences (FCB).

Rodríguez Padilla emphasized that this distinction holds special significance as it draws attention to the research conducted by women in the country.

A Lifelong Commitment to Scientific Research

Throughout her academic career, the FCB professor has focused on the research and study of the immune system, cancer, and viruses, as well as their interrelationships.

Due to the quality, results, and significance of her research, she has been a member of the National System of Researchers since 1991 and currently holds the rank of emeritus researcher, the highest distinction awarded by this system.

“All the research has been conducted at UANL, and due to the quality of our work and the results generated, we have collaborated with renowned national and international institutions,” said Rodríguez Padilla.

Encourages Youth to Engage in Science

With the goal of fostering a passion for science in young people, Rodríguez Padilla emphasizes the importance of creating environments that encourage students to engage in knowledge generation in Mexico.

She also highlights the significance of science in the country and urges young individuals to seek solutions to the health problems facing our society.
