Jose Roman Ruiz, a distinguished student from the School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, clinched a prestigious gold medal.
At the Santiago 2023 Parapan American Games, José Román Ruiz of Mexico not only secured the gold medal in the men’s shot put F35-36-37 category (cerebral palsy) but also etched his name in history by establishing a new record in the F36 class.
Setting a new standard, the student-athlete from the School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (FIME) at the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León achieved a remarkable throw of 14.90 meters during his initial attempt in the competition. This stellar performance not only secured a medal but also established a record for the Mexican delegation.
Román Ruiz achieved historic consecration in the F36 category during the competition held on November 23 at the Mario Recordón Athletic Center, situated within the Julio Martínez Prádanos National Stadium in Santiago de Chile.
The impressive mark of 14.90 meters in the F36 category surpasses the record set four years ago by Brazilian athlete João Teixeira, who achieved a throw of 13.84 meters at the 2019 Parapan American Games in Lima.
A Promising Ascent
The athlete’s journey commenced at the Lima 2019 Parapan American Games, where he secured a bronze medal. His exceptional performance at the FIME student marked a significant leap, propelling him to the prestigious Paralympic Games held in Tokyo in 2021.
In Japan, the Sinaloa athlete demonstrated remarkable prowess, finishing fourth in the shot put F36 category, further solidifying his burgeoning career on the international stage.”
