UANL moves higher in sustainability rankings

For the sixth consecutive year, the Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon (UANL) has been ranked as the most sustainable higher education institution in Mexico, according to the Green Metric 2022 world ranking.

For the sixth consecutive year, UANL has been ranked as the most sustainable university in the country in terms of waste management, energy, and water savings, recycling and mobility programs, as well as academic and scientific production; in 2022, it climbed to the 15th position worldwide.

Not only that, but the Maximum Academic Institution of Nuevo Leon climbed last year from 18th to 15th position worldwide, joining a select group of prestigious universities in the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Germany, and the United States.

These figures keep this institution of higher education ranked second in Latin America and third in North America.

Waste management, energy-saving, and water-saving programs recycling campaigns, and sustainable mobility projects within university facilities have contributed to these achievements.

For example, materials such as pet plastic and cardboard are collected inside university facilities to be reused instead of discarded; in the same way, an annual recycling and collection event for electronic devices is also held, gaining the community’s acceptance.

UANL has also implemented actions within its campuses to save water due to the drought conditions that have arisen in the region; likewise, the university buildings promote the reduction of energy consumption.

In 2012, UANL joined the GreenMetric world ranking, an initiative of Universitas Indonesia to evaluate the current situation and policies related to green campus concepts and sustainability around the world.

Since then, this institution has maintained a clear upward trend in the ranking, despite the fact that each year the number of universities participating in the evaluation has increased.
